The , or MJQ if you're tight with them, have been fixtures of the local jazz landscape since meeting back in 2006. They've probably seen more gigs than you've had hot dinners. When they play, don't expect them to stick to just one lane; their repertoire is a wide road indeed, spanning everything from classic jazz and Latin rhythms to blues, soul, and ballads. You might hear a bit of Ella Fitzgerald next to some Tom Waits, a musical journey from the early 1900s right up to today's sounds.
The quartet features Pam Allen on vocals, known for a vocal range and style that can probably tackle anything you throw at her. George Gerontakos handles the bass, apparently with a passionate love for all things musical, and specifically, for trees, axes, and fish. One can only assume he's talking about the instrument. On drums is Frank Corby, bringing an irrepressible charm and a 'psycho-groove' that sounds a touch alarming but is in fact utterly captivating. And last but not least, Neil Sagewood on piano, a bona fide master of the keys, whose playing is as smooth as a fresh pot of tea yet as eclectic as a Blue Mountains antique store. The best bit is that you won't need your wallet for this one; entry is free. They'll be setting up at The Old City Bank, 15 Katoomba Street, Katoomba, NSW, on Friday, 29 August 2025, with the tunes kicking off at 8:00 pm.
